West Hollywood Engagement Session | Rebecca & Devon

Rebecca and Devon live in West Hollywood, mere blocks from Candise and Griff, whose West Hollywood engagement session I photographed back in late 2010. Rebecca and Devon had booked us before our recent move down to San Diego and we had virtually met on Skype. Skype is definitely better than a phone call when it comes to connecting with people, so I knew we were going to get along well with these two. If there was any concern with our personalities meshing it was definitely put to rest when I texted Devon saying that we were “inbound mustang” as we reached Miramar on our northbound route from San Diego to meet them and he replied back- “you’re vector zero-nine-zero for bogey.” It takes special people to reach this level of Top Gun geekery pre-session. After lunch our plan was to head to the Hollywood Bowl, and then on to Griffith Observatory for the second part of the session. Since I had previously photographed part of a session in the Hollywood Bowl I knew there was a good chance we’d be able to get in and out with out raising any alarms with security guards. Knowing that Los Angeles can be a little tricky with all of the movie industry stuff I was prepared to get in and out of the Bowl fast. Ironically I was less concerned with the observatory having read their rules on photography and finding them to be geared towards commercial shoots (which I don’t consider engagements to fall under). When we arrived at the observatory we were shut down before we even got a shot in by an art and love hating security guard showed who told us to vacate the area. Never mind that family portrait session going on a few steps away from where we were… So with half of our planned locations compromised we were in a rush to find something awesome before we ran out of light. We stumbled upon the Hollyhock House, a nearby historical home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. I’m not sure if there are any rules against photography outside the house in the park area, but we managed to avoid getting ejected out of that location. We ended up taking a few photos in the neighborhood where Rebecca and Devon live, but I think we may end up doing a part two session to make up for the time we lost with the observatory fiasco. Despite our mild run in with the pseudo-law, we did have a great time hanging out with these two and are looking forward to them visiting us in San Diego!

Oregon Coast Engagements | Kathryn & Jeremy

The Oregon Coast is a classic spot for engagement photos near Portland. I have been to Cannon Beach a handful of times and have seen my share of posts from other photographers with Haystack Rock in the background. When Kathryn contacted me about doing an engagement session for her and her fiance Jeremy, she mentioned wanting to do some Oregon Coast stuff. Immediately my narrow mind was wondering what I’d do after I got that iconic Haystack shot. Luckily for me, she and Jeremy had a favorite spot they like to visit in Oswald State Park that has a lot more to it than just a beach with a big moonrock. We bonded pretty quickly as former midwesterners tend to do on the west coast, and had a fantastic few hours taking photos in the forest, and chasing down the last of the light on the beach. Thanks guys for sharing your spot with us, it’s definitely one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. And thanks for such a great day! Shoots like this make me love my “work.”

Seattle Engagement Session | Kriss & Jeremiah

The Seattle Public Market, City Center, and Gasworks park all add up to an iconic engagement session for us, as well as a jaunt down memory lane. When Kriss and Jeremiah suggested going up to Seattle for their engagement session, Melissa and I were excited to head up for a day to our former home. Ironically enough, even though I officially got my start shooting weddings years ago in Seattle I never really did many engagement sessions there. So while I’m sure popular spots like the Public Market, City Center, and Gasworks are very familiar to Seattle based photographers, for me it was fun to do all of the notable locations for the first time. We had really nice weather that day, and the dusk view of the city from Gasworks park was epic. Looking forward to our June wedding with these two!

Downtown Portland & Pearl District Engagement Session | Udaya & Santi

Downtown Portland waterfront and Pearl District engagement sessions give you two distinct looks, with minimal travel. We had a lot of fun walking around Tom McCall waterfront park, Tanner Springs park, and the Pearl District area with Udaya & Santi.

The Tom McCall waterfront park is a favorite among Portlanders.

Tanner Springs park is a great place for portrait sessions. A little modern oasis in the city.

Here’s a tip when planning your engagement session- always research ahead when considering important locations. Portland’s Chinese Gardens have special rules and restrictions regarding photo shoots there. Of course even the outside walls are pretty neat, and we love to improvise.

Portland Nob Hill Engagement Session | Natalie & Blake

Melissa and I have always loved the vibe of Portland’s Nob Hill neighborhood, and it became the perfect backdrop for our engagement session with Natalie and Blake. You may recognize Natalie from our posts on Women For Success, the charity organization we joined last year. When we met Natalie and got to know her, we instantly thought she was totally awesome. And even luckier for us, she just happened to be getting married to Blake (who is also totally awesome) and they needed photographers. We still had their date available and the rest was history. We really enjoyed just getting walk around their neighborhood with them, the weather was perfect, the photos were good, and we even had time for gelato!
