Kiss the Brides Expo 2012

Last Wednesday Melissa and I decided at the last minute to sign up to be exhibitors at the Kiss the Brides Expo show in southwestern Riverside County. It was a bit short notice, but we managed to get a booth together with the help of some friends. The show was held at the Pala Casino Spa Resort, which is in between Temecula and Escondido. We weren’t really sure what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised at the location and the turnout. We meet a lot of awesome potential clients, and got a little time to network with the other vendors too. I thought I’d post a shot of our booth from the event, and also some of the floral arrangements from Paul and Erick of Temecula Floral Design Studio, who were in the booth across from ours. Erick mentioned that they’d be doing some maintenance on their website, so if you need to get in contact with them and it’s not up yet, send me a message. We held a contest for a free engagement session for attendees of the event who signed up, and we’ll be announcing the winner this Friday on the blog! So please check back if you entered the drawing!

McMenamins Kennedy School Wedding | Emily & John

The Kennedy School in Portland was one of the first places we visited when we moved to SE Portland. Like many of the McMenamins locations they took a building that had a specific intended purpose, and transformed it into something completely different. The Kennedy School was in fact an elementary school, built in 1915. Now it’s a hotel complete with restaurants, bars, a movie theater, and in the case of Emily and John- an awesome wedding venue. The interior of the school fit the quirky personalities of our couple, and we had a great time exploring and photographing around the premises before the ceremony. The reception was held in the gymnasium, and I have to say it’s the most fun I’ve ever had in a gym! Emily and John also opted in on the Fauxtobooth, which was a perfect match with their fun loving personalities! Orfila Winery Wedding | Michelle & Bobby

Orfila Vineyards and Winery is one of our favorite wedding venues in San Diego. When I got an inquiry late September 2010 for a wedding here I was pretty happy that we might have the opportunity to shoot there in 2011. As I was scanning over the details of the email I noticed that the bride’s last name looked very familiar. Sure enough, Michelle and I had gone to high school together. I wasn’t exactly sure whether or not that would work to my advantage for booking the wedding, but luckily Michelle either didn’t remember anything weird about me from high school or liked the photos well enough to have a little selective amnesia. Either way we were thrilled to be able to shoot her wedding.

A few months later Michelle emailed me asking for a videographer recommendation, and I immediately knew I needed to convince her to bring in Marc Rotse from Moving Picture Weddings. When I was thinking about the word that best sums up the feeling I had when I was shooting this wedding the word that first came to mind was- familiarity. A bride from the same high school, a venue we had an amazing wedding in previously, and having my man Marc along for the ride just made for a wonderful relaxed event.

It was a perfect day with great people, amazing scenery, delicious food, and it all finished off with a killer dance party! Congratulations Michelle and Bobby, it was an honor to be part of such a fantastic day!

The Rancho Bernardo Inn was a great place to get ready, and also take portraits of the girls later.

Nestled in the Escondido hills near the Wild Animal Park, Orfila Winery is a great spot for an intimate event.

The light in the vineyard that day was amazing!

Planking on the dance floor? First time I’ve seen it!

Yep that’s me in the last photo with Michelle, and London. We all went to Helix together, but I’m not saying what year!

World Forestry Center | Lynn & Jack

We’re thrilled to post Lynn & Jack’s World Forestry Center Portland wedding! Lynn is an evolutionary biologist, and Jack is a software engineer. They met five years ago in Atlanta at a pub trivia. Although they still currently live in Atlanta, they decided to come back to Portland where Lynn is originally from to have their wedding. They both have a love of outdoor activities, so the World Forest Center was a perfect fit. Everything about their day was laid back, fun, and stress free. Oh and if you’re wondering why we took a photo of their rings on a Chicken magazine, it’s because they have pet chickens back home. The chickens had to make an appearance at least once on their day!

Zenith Vineyard Wedding | Natalie & Blake

Zenith Vineyards in Salem, Oregon, was the site of our second Women For Success wedding. If you follow our blog you may remember Natalie and Blake’s engagement session, or some of Natalie’s appearances at the Women For Success events we’ve covered in Portland. When we met Natalie last year and began talking about her wedding, she downplayed how great it was going to be. “I plan events for work,” she’d tell us, “I don’t want there to be this expectation that it’s going to be super detailed or awesome.” Well now that it’s officially all said and done, I can say- yeah right Natalie. Your wedding was totally awesome. The details were simple, elegant, and we loved the blueberry theme. And of course the venue itself was nothing short of beautiful. How can you go wrong with a Salem vineyard? The dress was classic, and I’ve been tortured with enough Sex and the City episodes to actually know that Manolo Blahnik wedding shoes are hot. Blake pulled off his white bowtie with James Bond-like class, and the ’62 Bentley getaway car was all sorts of classy. I could give you many other examples of the detail elements of this wedding, however as great as those things are, they are just things. In weddings, pretty things are often overshadowed by something else much greater. What made this wedding great is that Natalie and Blake are just splendid people, and every element of their day completely reflected that fact. This season has been chock full of amazing weddings which has been a great reminder of why we shoot weddings. We love these photos, and we love these people. So what else can I say?
